The third artistic residency of the European project AFAR has ended

From May 24 to June 11, Megan Dominescu (RO), a visual artist based in Bucharest, Romania, with a background in painting and origins from Washington, D.C., engaged with the local art scene through visits to studios, exhibitions, and interesting new locations as part of her residency. She created new artworks related to the main themes of the project: ecology, sustainability, heritage, and textile arts, which will be exhibited in the final exhibitions in Zagreb, Vienna, and Bucharest. In addition to her artistic work, she also gave a lecture at the Academy of Fine Arts on June 3 at 7:00 PM, followed by a conversation with Sven Jozić (AFAR Talk).

On June 8, together with Prof. Nikolina Knežević Hrgović, mag.art.edu., she conducted a workshop titled “Weaving Techniques,” where she presented her artistic work and the technique of rug hooking.

„I enjoyed my time in the artist residence in Zagreb. I was very pleased with the studio space and the city has a nice energy. These factors provided a good environment for me to live and work for a few weeks. The focus of my works was ecology and sustainability and I used general environmental topics in my pieces. Although not directly about specific global issues, I use a lot of fantasy and fiction in my work in order to portray a certain idea that illuminates a real-world problem, such as extinction of a species. I sourced materials locally, I used recycled textiles and I also bought textile materials from the store in Zagreb. My time passed very quickly which always means I had a good time. I visited many places, the museums in Zagreb and also met with local young creative people and exchanged ideas and talked about art. I explored the city on my own and found many interesting things. I really enjoyed having the artist lecture at the Academy of Arts which was very well-received by the students, some of which have contacted me since the talk because they enjoyed it. I feel inspired and clear-headed after my time in the Zagreb residency.“
