WHAT DO YOU MEAN – YOU LOVE ANIMALS?
Ivana Filip
PM Gallery
Feb 25 – Mar 13, 2019
Exhibition opening: Monday, February 25 at 7 pm at the Home of HDLU
Ivana Filip’s exhibition at the PM Gallery derives from her research of and fascination with the relationship between people and animals, either from her own experience or the experience of others. How to be a human today, this can be gleaned from how a person treats others who are not he or she, but it. Starting from the bioethical relation of human beings to life and world around them, in this case non-human animals, the artist questions the righteousness and wrongness of human anthropocentricity, actions and contemporary ways of living.
The artist’s personal experience of a deeper relationship with animals, while growing up and later through activism, plant diet, volunteering with abandoned animals, still opens up new questions which she may or may not find the answer to. She is motivated to ask these questions aloud and go beyond self-centred art, to which everything is allowed and which is lulled into safety; a scene of an artist as a ‘protected bear’ actually looking at a bear on the verge of extinction.
The tools used come from various disciplines, such as anthrozoology, spirituality, social and scientific experiments, religion, psychology, activism, everyday life and personal experiences. The artist’s background in the field of economics influenced her questioning of sustainability of works, immateriality, recycling, life cycle of materials and of what we call a product – an artwork. She thinks that in each creative process there is a driving force that is sometimes visible, but sometimes is not, in the artwork itself, some sort of small catharsis that changes the creator, but also the one faced with the work.
