Exhibition: Difference Engine XI – ALTERN_ATORS

Difference Engine XI
ALTERN_ATORS
Bačva Gallery
April 19 – May 6, 2018

The eleventh edition of the travelling exhibition Difference Engine XI – ALTERN_ATORS by the Irish art collective of the same name, will open on Thursday, 19 April, 2018 at 7pm at the Bačva Gallery of the Croatian Association of Artists (HDLU).

This exhibition is part of a return international collaboration between the Croatian Association of Artists (HDLU) and Pallas Projects/Studio that, besides presenting Irish artists, also includes the presentation of Croatian artists in Dublin, Ireland at the exhibition ‘I Saw a Woman in Inverness Whom I Shall Never Forget’ (Antun Maračić, Andreja Kulunčić, Bojan Mucko, Ana Mušćet) and a lecture by the Croatian artists at the prestigious Trinity College.

In the Bačva Gallery, Irish artists will be represented through a site-specific installation accompanied by images, photographs and sound installations.

Difference Engine is both an evolving exhibition and a model of artist-led curation by Wendy Judge, Gillian Lawler, Mark Cullen and Jessica Foley.

Difference Engine play with the idea of ‘jamming’, which in one sense ‘jamming’ signifies stasis, shock, or rupture, but in another sense it signifies change, growth, improvisation and invigoration between players.

Increasingly, we feel and know that we are living through a moment of rapid technological and environmental change, pervasive wars and intellectual, emotional and political inertia. We live and work in societies and contexts increasingly conditioned by anti-democratic politics, predictive policing algorithms and grotesque technological consumerism, irresponsibility andwaste. More than ever, we feel the necessity of art.
