(In)Constancy of Space – Spaces of Narration and Imagination group international exhibition opens at the Prsten Gallery, Home of the Croatian Association of Artists on Thursday, 5 July 2018, at 20:00 h.
The exhibition (In)Constancy of Space: Spaces of Narration and Imagination problematizes descriptive, formal, symbolic, psychological and sociological aspects of the text in creating two-dimensional and three-dimensional spaces in the works of contemporary visual artists. Text and visual art are two ways of depicting space, both the physical and mental one, and the exhibition focuses on different possibilities of their interaction. Works in which the text generates formal and formative characteristics are brought into a visual and thematic dialogue with the ones in which the text is the primary bearer of content, i.e. narration. The curators used Josip Vaništa’s work from 1964 as a starting reference, in which the artist dematerialized the painting and its space, that is, he reduced it to a text written with a typewriter on a piece of paper as a kind of meta-instruction on how to execute the painting. Since the moment when Vaništa achieved “the most radical achievement of the 20th century Croatian art“ the mutual interactions of visual, spatial, textual and verbal-auditory aspects have continued to permeate the works of future generations of Croatian artists. Along with Croatian, the exhibition (In)Constancy of Space: Spaces of Narration and Imagination also features renowned contemporary Austrian artists, and it questions whether and to what extent – in the context of globalization, virtualization and migration processes – the lexical, i.e. linguistic basis still conditions the narrative and imaginative determinants of shaping, or better yet, describing specific spatial situations.
